A nonprofit community center
serving Carbondale and the region.

Our story is really three different stories.

The building’s story begins with the Carbondale Elementary School. It was built in 1961 and added onto each decade that followed, resulting in the building that is today the Third Street Center.

The second story is the transformation from a dated educational facility into a modern community center. Natural light streams in from big windows and skylights. A spacious and ample design makes room for large events and offices and studios. the building is so energy efficient it operates at less than net-zero.

This was due to a fantastic collaboration between the Town of Carbondale, The Roaring Fork School District, the Manaus Fund, Alpine Bank, Roaring Fork CDC, and SCOR, design professional, tradespeople, doors, and tenants.

And then there is the story since our opening in 2010. The tenants, uses, spaces have changed, but the overall spirit remains strong.Moss outside entry

By day, groups meet here to hatch new ideas. Nonprofits carry out their missions. People meditate and worship. Monks create mandalas. Young and old come to dance, students stage plays.

It is the story we continue building today, with the imagination and resourcefulness of the people of Carbondale and the region.
